Bailey language arts class focuses on close, annotated sustained reading, vocabulary in context, writing to learn, grammar, informal and formal research, and public speaking. These areas are reinforced using supplementary texts Springboard, Holt McDougal Literature, novels, Kelly Gallagher's article of the week, and other teacher-selected, on-line materials.
"Challenge," this year's literary topic, will be explored through fiction, non-fiction, and media. The challenging, Article of the Weeks do not depict teacher opinions, but rather are chosen for argumentative writing and debate. Students are expected to make their own copy; however, if a student does not have access to a printer at home, I will be happy to copy the article.
Writing connections will be expository, persuasive, literary criticism, and research.
I am a firm believer better readers make better writers and better students; remind your student to bring a book to read every school day.
